About The Department
Established in 1927 under Prof. Edward Barnes, the Department of Chemistry at Madras Christian College evolved from its
origins within the Natural Sciences division in 1919 to become a distinguished centre for chemical education and research. The
department prioritizes a holistic and innovative educational approach.
The curriculum is continually updated to include new
courses and modern scientific advancements. Students engage in field activities and practical projects to connect classroom
knowledge with real-world applications. To support students' success, the department offers free coaching for national
competitive exams like JAM and CSIR/GATE, which has led to high admission rates in top national institutions.
Beyond academics, the department's educational mission includes a Service Learning Program, where students teach science
to tribal children, promoting social responsibility. The department is also a hub for research, evidenced by a DST-FIST
sponsorship and over one crore in research grants. The faculty's prolific research output, with over 150 Scopus-indexed
publications in the last five years, enriches the academic environment. A dynamic alumni network significantly contributes to
the department's growth, funding major infrastructure enhancements, including state-of-the-art labs and a seminar hall,
supported by the benevolence of Mrs. Indra Krishnamurthy Nooyi.
This comprehensive model, which integrates academics, research, and community service, earned the department "The Best
Performing Science Department Award" for 2021-2022. The department continues to set high benchmarks in creating wellrounded
scientific leaders.
